Blue is the new black

CUP ISA WAVES BLUE/BLACK D8 H6,2
Designer:
Isabelle de Borchgrave is well known for her artistic papier-mâché designs. With her handmade paper vase collection Milieux de vos tables, for example, she ingeniously succeeded in leading the viewer to think that they are stoneware of Coptic origin. For her Blue is the New Black tableware collection, she has reversed the roles of materials. She made moulds out of papier-mâché to ensure the uneven texture would be transferred to the porcelain plates, bowls, serving dishes, cups, and serving spoons. Aquamarine blue and black patterns are painted onto the white surfaces like a kind of calligraphy. Thus, Isabelle’s Blue is the New Black tableware collection is reminiscent of the prestigious nineteenth-century Tournai porcelain. But the question keeps lingering … Is it paper or porcelain? With Isabelle de Borchgrave, you never know.
